Several years ago as Den Leader I took my boys fishing to earn the FLW “Master Angler” patch. Now with my younger son in Cub Scouts, it seemed like a good opportunity to recognize some of this summer’s fishing time with a patch too.

What I found is a neat set of materials as part of the Passport – Take Me Fishing program that concludes with a patch program for Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and volunteers. Best of all, there are some very cool materials that cover more than just fishing, but also boating safety (where age appropriate), included in the program.

The plans include a series of 6 stations that cover boating safety, knot tying and handling fish, along with printable materials (or you can purchase materials pre-printed) and beautiful color brochures. Kids will fulfill many rank requirements in Cub Scouts, as well as earning the patch.

It takes about 2-3 hours to run an event using the plans provided, and can be run indoors, or out.

I sure wish I had found this earlier in the year and our Pack would have hosted a fishing derby this summer. You can BET we’re going to do this in Spring 2011!

Note: once you apply for the program, the materials are not compressed, and take a LONG time to download. They are over 110MB in size! So be patient, and try to use a fast internet connection. I was really impressed with what they have provided!
