A Merit Badge session at Gateway for $5, including Lunch and a patch!

 All are being done with top community partners and knowledgeable staff from Gateway Tech (using their equipment).

 Where? At Southeast Wisconsin Council, Inc., Boy Scouts of America’s own:

University of Scouting Adult Leader Training

and Boy Scout Merit Badge Tech

On Saturday, March 5, 2011, Southeast Wisconsin Council, Boy Scouts of America will partner with Gateway Technical College to offer special adult leader training and merit badge skill center will be held at Gateway Technology College Kenosha Campus on 30th Avenue in Kenosha. The day for everyone will begin in the Madrigrano Center with an opening ceremony at 8:00 a.m. Some merit badge participants will be transported to Gateway facilities at the CATI Center in Sturtevant and the Horizon Center in Kenosha with others badges offered at the Biocatt Center at the 30th Avenue location. All adult leader training will be at the Kenosha Campus on 30th Avenue in various classrooms. Lunch and a participation patch (for Merit Badge Tech) will be included in a minimal registration fee of $5.00.

The University of Scouting training will be for all Adults with Cub Scout Leaders sessions in the morning and Boy Scout Leaders in the afternoon. Seasoned veteran volunteers will conduct these very informative training sessions. Please look for more information at each District Roundtable in January and February.

All Boy Scouts age 12 and above* will be allowed to participate in one merit badge skill center delivered by Gateway Staff, Community Partners and Merit Badge Counselors. There will be more information on sign-up and merit badges offered on our website www.sewisbsa.com in mid-January with online registration opening on February 1, 2011. Imagine doing automotive maintenance, plant science,aviation, electronics, personal management, surveying, computers, home repair and others, with top community partners and knowledgeable staff from Gateway Tech. Space will be limited for each merit badge so make sure to register February 1, 2011.

Parents of Scouts will be welcome to attend any adult leader training and Gateway Technical Staff will be offering informational sessions on college planning including a tour of the facilities. Life to Eagle training will begin immediately after the closing ceremony at 3:30 in the Madrigrano Center at Gateway’s Kenosha Campus and last and hour and a half. All Scouts and parents are welcome to attend. The focus is to assist Scouts working towards the rank of Eagle Scout to Be Prepared.

    Hi Brenda, the BSA says that “any Scout may begin working on any merit badge at any time.” That said, there is some discretion of the home Scoutmaster if the Scout is individually ready for the safety and responsibility of what earning the badge may entail, but that should not be based solely on age. For example, some merit badges are inherently more dangerous than others – Welding or SCUBA. If a Scout cannot yet focus his energy in a safe way, the Scoutmaster should encourage the Scout to wait before signing that blue card. But many younger kids are very capable and ready, so age alone should not be a disqualifier. To be perfectly clear, however, the Guide to Safe Scouting does clearly lay out activities that are prohibited by age. This would indicate that indeed the BSA condones any merit badge at any age, unless the specific activities are prohibited by GSS.
    To sign up, have your son click on the merit badge he wants to work on, and a link that says “register for this merit badge” should appear. Click that, and he will provide his contact information. Payment will be made on site the day of the clinic.
    While your son is at the clinic, please consider joining us for the University of Scouting we will be offering all day long! Cubs in the morning, and Boy Scouting in the afternoon!
