[Special thanks to guest writer Chris Hicks of Troop 239 in Lake Geneva for providing a recap of this weekend’s Nuclear Science MB Workshop at UW-Madison!]

What’s the difference between nuclear fission and nuclear fusion? Just how much energy can be produced by the reactions that occur in a nuclear reactor? What exactly are the dangers associated with operating a nuclear reactor?

These questions and many more were addressed at a one-day merit badge workshop presented by nuclear engineering students at UW-Madison on November 10, 2012.

The workshop was divided into multiple sessions (nuclear reactor tour, careers in nuclear science, radiation exposure, nuclear clouds, nuclear fission and nuclear fusion lab tour) that explored all facets of the field of nuclear science.
