Take a look in the May scouting magazine and you’ll see and article in the cub corner labeled (HIGH -WIRE?)

http://www.scoutingmagazine.org/

Its an article about running a Belt loop day for the scouts as described by lighthouse districts  Sandy Martens. Many of us in the Fox River have met Sandy or her husband Vaughn at a number of events here, the latest being the district pinewood derby.

Kind of interesting reading about a belt loop day cause I was in the process of planning one for the local packs in our area for June geared entirely to sports. Info on this will be available at the may Roundtable.

If you or you pack are interested in attending a Belt loop-a-palooza in Salem or a Troop, Patrol or Parent wanting to run one of the many stations please let me know at kenpack328@wi.rr.com

A few years ago I was talking to Mike Palacek about Scouting the Zoo, an annual event held by the MCC in June where Scouts get to stay overnight at the Zoo. Why don’t WE have something like that here in SEWIS?

This year we DO! Best of all, its geared for families, so EVERYONE can partake! Keep June 18, 2010 open and plan to join us with your family down on the lakefront!

Download the CS Overnight at Racine Zoo flyer, and don’t forget to check out all of the cool opportunities on the EVENTS page!

Cub Scout 2010

2010 April 9

I’ve been giving a little thought to our next few Pack meetings. The transition away from monthly themes is one that is going to be very hard for me. I loved the monthly themes. In fact, I bought many themed flags to use during opening and flag ceremonies. It’s a fun collection to have, and I’m sure I will find a way to continue to use them with the Pack.

But Cub Scouts is making a transition to a new program, built around Cub Scouting’s 12 Core Values. And to be honest, although they have been in each rank book, I have to admit that they don’t yet just roll off my tongue. Perhaps it is a good idea to embrace the core values in a new way.

And from what I understand, that is pretty much what the Cub Scout 2010 program is about.

It’s a shame that BSA is taking so incredibly long to get training and materials out to units before our “old” program runs out. (Program helps don’t exist beyond August 2010 right now.) I’m sure that is going to create some degree of stress for us to get things out to busy volunteers who we just have less contact with in the summer time. But I’m optimistic that with strong support from one another, we’re going to do great with this new program!

Do you know the 12 Core Values of Cub Scouting?

Citizenship: Contributing service and showing responsibility to local, state, and national communities.

Compassion: Being kind and considerate, and showing concern for the well-being of others.

Cooperation: Being helpful and working together with others toward a common goal

Courage: Being brave and doing what is right regardless of our fears, the difficulties, or the consequences.

Faith: Having inner strength and confidence based on our trust in God.

Health and Fitness: Being personally committed to keeping our minds and bodies clean and fit.

Honesty: Telling the truth and being worthy of trust.

Perseverance: Sticking with something and not giving up, even if it is difficult.

Positive Attitude: Being cheerful and setting our minds to look for and find the best in all situations.

Resourcefulness: Using human and other resources to their fullest.

Respect: Showing regard for the worth of something or someone.

Responsibility: Fulfilling our duty to God, country, other people, and ourselves.

Recently the boys from Pack 353 had a BB gun shooting event at the Southport Gun Club  http://www.southportgunclub.com/ in Kenosha.  The boys and their leaders and parents met with a gun safety instructor for a lesson on safe gun handling techniques and shooting and range rules and then proceeded to have the shooting competition.  The boys that scored a 35 or higher on a 50 point target earned a patch from the NSSF Junior USA Shooting Team. http://www.nssf.org/JrUSA/ Highest scoring shooters earned trophies and everyone had a fun time while learning gun safety.

Kids Bowl Free

2010 March 22

I can hear the “I’m bored” kicking in – and its not June yet.

Summer vacation is great! For the first few days that is ~ but the fun wears thin long before August comes, and as often as the boys are out being Scouts, there is still a lot of time to kill.

Here’s a great idea! Each summer, participating bowling centers give kids who sign up two free games of bowling every day, all summer long!

Check out http://www.kidsbowlfree.com/ to get signed up! Signup starts this Tuesday, but you have to be signed up before school is out. If I remember correctly they close the program at some point.

There are participating alleys in both Kenosha and Union Grove. (I kind of wish the alley in Waterford was participating too! I may have to send this to them.) You can also purchase a “family pass” for about $25 which allows up to 4 adults to bowl up to two free games per day when you’re with the kids. Great family time together!

Have you noticed the Yearbook link at the top of the page yet?

We would like to collect information from every Fox River unit to put together a little biography of our district. Something special for the Centennial, but we could perhaps continue the project on long after 2010.

Cubmasters, Scoutmasters and Advisors – please take a few minutes and fill out the survey, won’t you?
